Frequently
Asked Questions

Many people are concerned about using steel fasteners with aluminium, due to the risk of galvanic corrosion. This is a risk if the steel has direct contact with the aluminium, or if there is an electrolyte separating them, as the potential difference between the two is significant. Steel fasteners can be used if they’re coated with an insulator or have a sacrificial coating. In addition, using a rubber or synthetic washer, packing the fastening with grease or using non-metallic fastenings can all greatly reduce the chances of galvanic corrosion occurring.

Trade experts recommend using cement screws, galvanised screws (screws that have been coated, normally in zinc, to reduce corrosion) or steel screws. In terms of design, it’s recommended to use screws with a thread that covers the bulk of the shaft – these are less likely to split typical subfloor materials such as plywood. They’re also resistant to lateral forces, which are common in a subfloor.

Hardie board is a type of fibre cement board that’s a popular choice for weatherboards to protect properties from the elements. Fibre cement board is best fastened into place using screws that have been specifically designed for use with fibre cement material. Typically these screws are made from galvanised (to protect from corrosion) stainless steel.

Washers serve a number of different purposes. Some of these include stopping friction between the bolt and the surface it’s screwed into, acting as an insulating layer (to reduce the risk of galvanic corrosion), as an electrical insulator, spreading the load of the bolt across a wider surface and reducing the risk of the bolt loosening over time. There are a variety of different washers available. The right one for the job depends not only on its prime purpose but also on the surface and bolt materials.

One of the main purposes of different screw heads is to make the screwing action more efficient. A Phillips screw head (a type of cruciform screw head) is generally found to be less prone to stripping than a slotted screw (a screw with a single, horizontal slot to hold the screwdriver in place). Screws may have heads that are designed to rest flush with the surface or heads that protrude from the surface. It’s also possible to get Torx or Hex screw heads for specialist jobs. Each screw design is intended to enable the screw to do its job better, and different jobs require a specific type of screw for the best results.

There are several reasons why this may happen. Drywall should be fixed in place using fasteners that are intended for the purpose. Typically, drywall anchors or toggles should hold drywall securely in place. Using incorrect fastenings may result in the fixings popping loose. Other reasons for screws to pop out of drywall include shrinkage in the timber behind the drywall, screws that have been incorrectly inserted and framing issues.

The majority of fasteners are made from galvanised stainless steel. Fasteners may also be made of aluminium alloys, brass, bronze or steel. Fasteners are frequently coated (galvanised) to prevent corrosion. Chrome and zinc are commonly used coatings. When selecting the correct fastener material for the job, consideration must be given to factors such as the surface material, function, level of strength required, likely degree of exposure to corrosive agents, size of the fastener required and the budget.
